Vocabulary
Polis - A city-state in ancient Greece. They were significant because they each developed a different way allowing Greece to be the way it is.
Alexandria - A city started by Alexander the Great in Egypt. It's important because it was in a key position in his empire.
Herodotus - An ancient Greece historian, he lived in the fifth century BC. He is considered the world's first historian
Hippocrates - An ancient Greece physician of the age of Pericles. He is important because he is considered one of the most outstanding figures in medicine.
Parthenon - A temple in the Athenian Acropolis, dedicated to the Goddess Athena who the Athenians considered their patron. It was significant because it was built to show the prowess of the Athenians.
Tyrant - Someone who illegally seized and controlled a government power in a polis. This is important because tyrants controlled much of Greece after a time.
Pericles - Prominent and influential Greek orator and general of Athens during the citys Golden Age. He is important because
Homer - Revered as the greatest ancient Greek epic poet who wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey. He is important because the Greeks considered his epic poems to be history.
Citizen - An inhabitant of a city or town, one entitled to the rights and privileges of a freeman. This word is important because it is what people born in the polises were called and anyone who came from another area wasn't considered a citizen.
Ostracism - Procedure under the Athenian democracy in which any citizen could be expelled from the city-state for ten years. This is important because it is the method they used to get rid of many people.
